This map shows the percentage of ancestry resembling that from Roman Anatolia in select countries of the modern Balkans according to a 2023 study by Olalde et al.

To me, the high degree of this admixture in Albania was astounding and I theorized that Roman Anatolians, that are attested to have inhabited towns along the northern border of the empire, might have fled to Anatolia when the Slavs arrived (or potentially even earlier).

The high affinity of modern Greek Islanders on the other hand, was less surprising.
