Cranial shape — including the degree of occipital flattening — varies continuously across Europe without discrete regional boundaries. There are broad gradients of variation, but no evidence of clear ‘hotspots’ where flat backs are uniquely prevalent. It seems to be especially common in Albania and parts of eastern Anatolia
