New land border: Canada and Denmark split Hans Island in 2022

For years, Canada and Denmark playfully “fought” over Hans Island by planting flags and leaving bottles of whisky or schnapps for the other side. The barren rock sits in the Nares Strait, right between Greenland and Canada’s Ellesmere Island. In 2022, the two countries finally settled the so-called “Whisky War” with a treaty that split the island in half, creating the world’s newest land border.
