Number of Austrians living in European countries (in thousands)

Around 625,000 Austrians live outside of Austria. For comparison, the population of Carinthia is 570,000!

More than half of Austrians living abroad reside in Germany 🇩🇪 and Switzerland 🇨🇭 (255,000 and 67,000 people, respectively). The next largest countries of residence are: Great Britain 🇬🇧 (41,700), the USA 🇺🇸 (40,000), Australia 🇦🇺 (22,500), and Israel 🇮🇱 (21,300).

Important: Since there is no legal obligation to report permanent residence abroad, these figures are only estimates from Statistics Austria.
