EU citizens benefit from the right to live and work in any other EU country without the need for special permits or visas. As a result of this freedom, it's estimated that around 13.6 million EU citizens currently live in a different EU country than their own.

The largest number of migrants left from Romania, Italy, and Poland. Over 1 million Romanians live in Italy, and over 770,000 reside in Germany. Polish citizens most commonly choose Germany (more than 740,000) and the Netherlands (around 194,000). Meanwhile, Italians tend to move to Germany (over 570,000) and Spain (more than 320,000).

Relative to the population, the highest emigration rates are from Romania (16.28%), Croatia (14.9%), and Bulgaria (11.68%).
