In 2024, renewable energy made up 25.2% of the EU’s total energy consumption. Among EU countries, Sweden recorded the highest share, followed by Finland and Denmark. All three relied mainly on solid biomass, hydropower and wind.

By contrast, the lowest shares were recorded in Belgium (14.3%), Luxembourg (14.7%) and Ireland (16.1%).

The European Parliament (EP) adopted a law banning Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2026 and Russian pipeline gas by late 2027.
