europeanorigins:
This is the third post of my series on the cultural impact that various ethnolinguistic groups had on the states of modern Germany, this time taking a look at the impact of Slavic-speaking populations.
Much of eastern Germany was settled by Slavs from the 6th Century onwards. Archaeological data suggests that most (although not all) of the previous Germanic-speaking groups had largely abandoned the region before. The remaining Germanic groups assimilated into Slavic society and culture in the course of the next few centuries.
During the High and Late Middle Ages, this process was partially reversed, however, with German-speaking groups now settling among the Slavs of Eastern Germany and beyond, leading to a slow process of assimilation and acculturation. By the 13th Century, most of Eastern Germany was culturally German, with only small pockets in Brandenburg and Saxony holding out today.
