Jewish people in North America

african.mapper:

North America is home to the largest Jewish population in the world, with an estimated total of about 7.7 million Jewish people as of 2024. Jewish history in the United States began in 1654 with Sephardic Jews arriving in New Amsterdam fleeing the Portuguese Inquisition. In Canada, Jews first arrived in the 1760s, later forming large communities in Montreal and Toronto. Mexico’s Jewish presence dates back to the colonial era, when crypto-Jews arrived under Spanish rule, often forced to hide their faith. Over time, small communities grew in North America, with major waves of Ashkenazi Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1924 to escape pogroms and persecution. Today, North American Jews have established vibrant, influential communities while preserving strong cultural and religious identities.
