The Schengen Area is one of Europe’s greatest achievements — a zone where borders fade and people, goods, and ideas move freely.

This map shows when each country joined Schengen, from the original five in 1995 to the most recent members. Today, the area includes most of the EU plus a few non-EU states, covering over 420 million people.
