In 954, the house of Wessex added the norse Northumbria to the new kingdom of England. However, Aethelread the Unready, 50 years after this, still had to pay tribute to the danish kings to be spared. This deal was known as the Danegeld, literally the "Dane Yield".

In Wales, kingdoms permanently rise, subjugating their neighbors, and fall, most of the time at ruler's death. At this time, Cynan ap Hywel unified Gwynedd and Deheubarth. By Llywelyn ap Seisyll, actual king of Powys will soon surpass him.

In the north, the scot kings of Alba are about to integrate Moray, weakened by its wars against the norsemen, and Strathclyde, the last breton kingdom of Great Britain, fighting against England. On their side, the Gall Gaidheal (a mix of norse and gaellic cultures) and their kingdoms in the isles and Galloway will resist until XIIIth century

In Ireland, the realm is divided between two high kings. Mael Seachnaill II Mor, king of Mide since 980 rules over the Leath Cuinn, the northern part of the island. In the opposite, the Leath Moga is under the control of Brian Boru who faced the Ard Ri Erenn. Although he was born in a minor house, the Dal gCais, Brian took the Munster crown, imposed his rule over his neighbors and will soon unify Ireland under his personal power.
