kungming2:
🔴: Names derived from Chinese 中國 ("central state"/"middle kingdom"), including calques
🔵: Names derived from Sin-/Chin- possibly derived ultimately from the first unified empire 秦 (*dzin)
🟢: Names derived from the Khitan people (契丹). "Cathay" is an English cognate.
Names falling outside of those three origins:
- Tibetan རྒྱ་ནག ("the black expanse") , historically the term for China, still used by Tibetans-in-exile outside of China
- Burmese တရုတ် of uncertain derivation
- Okinawan 唐, from the Tang Dynasty (still used as a synonym for Chinese in some Japanese words)
Note: Mongolian within the PRC uses the traditional alphabet but I just couldn't get it to stack properly.
