Map of Official Flags of Sovereign States that Contain Writing

All official flags (national, civil, state, etc.) of sovereign states that contain writing. The language used on the most flags is Spanish (mostly in Latin America) followed by Arabic and Latin. English, French, and Portuguese each have one flag.

Notes regarding a few of the flags:

• Afghanistan: both the Islamic Republic (left) and the Islamic Emirate (right) have writing, hence both were included

• El Salvador: both the state flag (top) and civil flag (bottom) have writing

• Paraguay: two sides of the same flag, each with different writing

• Somaliland: the only partially recognized state (except for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) with writing on its flag
