In the UK, more than half of all food bought by families is now ultra-processed, making it the European country with the highest share of factory-made food in its diet. According to a study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, ultra-processed products account for 50.7% of household food purchases in the UK, followed by Germany (46.2%) and Ireland (45.9%).
The research, based on data from 19 European countries, shows a clear shift from fresh, minimally processed food to industrial products such as sugary cereals, snacks, ready-meals and sweetened drinks. Nutrition experts warn that these foods are designed to be cheap, long-lasting and highly appealing, but are strongly linked to obesity and poor health, highlighting how “real food” is being steadily replaced across Europe.
