Who owns the North Pole?

This map helps explain why Greenland has become such a strategic obsession Trump. Greenland isn’t just a huge island, it’s a gateway to the Arctic and the North Pole. As global warming melts Arctic ice, new sea routes are opening, cutting travel time between Europe, Asia, and North America and turning the region into a future trade highway.
Control in the Arctic also means influence over resources, military positioning, and shipping lanes. Russia already dominates almost half of the Arctic coastline and has heavily militarized the region, giving it a massive head start. The U.S. sees Greenland as a way to counter that power and secure long-term access to the High North.
What makes it even more tense is the center of the North Pole itself. Despite being classified as international waters, it’s highly disputed, with surrounding countries pushing scientific and legal claims to extend their influence. As the ice retreats, the Arctic is shifting from a frozen frontier into one of the most important geopolitical battlegrounds of the future.
