Belgium's linguistic landscape in 1930 differed from today. Around 53% of the population were native Dutch speakers, 45% French speakers, and 1% German speakers. Flanders was predominantly Dutch-speaking, Wallonia predominantly French-speaking, while Brabant was the most linguistically mixed province. Demographic change, urbanization, and the growing role of Brussels gradually reshaped the country's language balance during the twentieth century.
