Between 1950 and 2024, the world has grown markedly older. The global median age has increased from 22.2 years to 30.6 years, a demographic shift driven by longer life expectancy and lower birth rates.
In 2024 alone, the median age rose to 30.6, a 0.85% increase from 2023. By the end of the century, the global median age is projected to reach 42.1 years.
Societies will face pressure to adapt healthcare systems, pension structures, and workforce dynamics to a longer-living population. At the same time, regions with persistently younger populations, such as parts of Africa and South Asia, may find themselves holding a demographic advantage, with a larger share of working-age citizens powering economic growth.
