Number of US soldiers in Europe

Over 84,000 US soldiers are currently stationed in Europe. Since World War II, they have been supporting their European partners here, for example in NATO missions.

Now, however, the US government wants to withdraw several hundred troops from Romania – from a base near the Ukrainian border that is strategically important for the country's protection. The reason? The US wants to better protect its own borders instead, and Europe should take on more responsibility.
