Top countries by natural resource value

Russia sits on a massive amount of natural wealth, with huge reserves of oil, gas, coal, timber, and minerals. The United States and Canada follow, not just because of what they have underground, but because they can extract, refine, and sell it at scale. The Middle East is relatively small but extremely rich, home to three of the world’s most resource-wealthy countries: Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq.
In Asia, China and Australia stand out as the two main giants, combining large reserves with control over processing and rare earths. In South America, Brazil and Venezuela also hold enormous natural resource wealth.
But there’s a darker side: the “resource curse.” Countries rich in oil, gas, or minerals often face foreign pressure, internal conflict, or even war. Instead of bringing stability, natural wealth can attract interference, fuel corruption, and leave states weaker, divided, or attacked rather than prosperous.
