The most famous dead individuals born in each US state/territory

Udzu:

What is it?

This is a tile grid map showing the most famous dead individual born in each of the US states (plus DC and Puerto Rico), using a fame metric based on Wikipedia. In addition, here is a similar map showing the most famous individual to die in each state.

How does it work?

The fame measure is a combination of article length, number of revisions and typical page views in 2016. More precisely: it's the harmonic mean of the log-normalised article length, revision count and median monthly page views.

The list includes only dead individuals who are listed in one of Wikipedia's annual Births section (around 60,000 people). This should be fine for the bigger states, but may omit some important people for the smaller ones.

The data was generated and visualised using Python, Pandas, Pillow, and some helper libraries that I wrote.

Haven't I seen this already?

Possibly. I submitted this yesterday to both /r/dataisbeautiful and later to /r/MapPorn, but it was deleted from both: despite being a tile grid map, there was too little visualisation for the former, and too little geography for the latter. Still, I got some useful feedback both times, and have updated the post accordingly.

Balto?!

Yup, Balto really was the most famous dead Alaskan native. Partly this is because most famous Alaskans are either non-native or still alive (or in the case of Palin, both). Of the 193 Alakans listed here, just 71 are deceased, just 11 of those are native-born, and none are as famous as Balto!
