Modern sub-national regions of Europe named after ancient (extinct) peoples

DaniCBP:

Disclaimers:

  • Neither Wales nor the Basque Country are included because they're named after a group of people which still exists today with its own separate identity (the modern Welsh and Basque peoples)

  • Dotted areas mean that the information can be doubtful, for example we don't surely know if Gotaland or Masuria got the name from the people (Goths and Masurians) or vice-versa.

  • There are some theories about names (such as Andalucia coming from the Vandals, or Pomerania (which literally means "land by the sea") coming from the peoples there) that seem to be baseless theories, which I didn't include here.
