Name of the gulf located between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran

saudi.maps:

The gulf located between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran has a long history of naming. The earliest documented mention of the gulf dates back to a Babylonian tablet around 600 BC, where it was referred to as “Nar Murratum,” meaning the Bitter Sea, making it the first recorded mention of the gulf in history. Later, the name Persian Gulf appeared in Greek and Roman sources between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE, written in Latin as Persicus Sinus, and it later appeared on European maps in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The name “Arabian Gulf” also appeared on early European maps, especially Portuguese and Dutch ones, before being officially adopted by Arabs in documents and maps during the late Ottoman period and the late 19th century. Meanwhile, the name “Gulf of Basra” appeared later in Ottoman and Arab sources, associated with the city of Basra as an important port on the gulf. It is mostly used locally in Iraq and on some historical maps, but it is not an internationally official name.
