This map splits the world into five vertical slices, each containing about 1.64 billion people.
One slice has to include all of North and South America, part of Africa and Europe just to match the population of a red strip in Asia.
The red slice is the most striking: it’s extremely thin, yet it holds as many people as entire continents. That’s because it cuts through the most crowded part of the planet: India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia… countries that together make up billions of people.
