Khrushchev's offer to Hungary: The district of Berehove (Beregszász)

It is a well-known fact, that Khrushchev had given the Crimean peninsula to the Ukrainian SSR, however he also had some other plans. He suggested that the Kaliningrad oblast should belong to the Lithuanian SSR but Lithuania refused. A lesser-known fact is that Khrushchev had also offered the district of Berehove to Hungary in 1964. This district was the only Hungarian-majority district of the Soviet Union. The communist leadership of Hungary was totally shocked by the offer and refused it. Only few months after this offered Khrushchev was replaced from his office.
