Railway networks in Europe are mostly concentrated around major cities and industrial hubs, while sparsely populated areas have lower railway density. As a result, countries with large, less-populated regions tend to have lower railway network density, measured in meters of railway per km².
In 2023, Czechia had the highest density in the EU, followed by Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg , all well above the EU average of 49.0 m/km². In contrast, Greece had the lowest density, and other low-density countries included Finland, Sweden, the Baltic states, Portugal, Spain, and Ireland.
