Catholicism has been the dominant religion in South America since the 16th-century Spanish and Portuguese colonization, which spread the Catholic Church, today most South American countries still have Catholic majorities, though the percentage has been steadily declining.
Since the mid-20th century, Protestantism (especially Evangelical and Pentecostal churches) has grown rapidly through local preaching, community-based congregations, and strong missionary activity, becoming particularly influential in Brazil and Venezuela.
