Irreligion in the Balkans has grown mainly during the 20th and 21st centuries. The biggest turning point came under communist regimes after World War II, especially in Albania, Yugoslavia, and Bulgaria, where state atheism or restrictions on religion were imposed. Albania became the first officially atheist state in the world in 1967.
After the fall of communism in the 1990s, there was a general revival of religion, but irreligion persisted and even expanded among younger, urban populations.
Today, irreligion is strongest in Albania, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Türkiye while countries like Romania, Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia remain more religious due to stronger national traditions.
