Islam in Central Africa spread gradually from the 10th–11th centuries through trans-Saharan and regional trade networks linking North Africa with the Sahel and forest zones.
Muslim traders, scholars, and clerics introduced Islam peacefully to the region, often influencing local rulers who adopted Islam for its legal, educational, and commercial advantages. Islamic centers developed around trade routes and courts, with Qur’anic education and Sufi brotherhoods playing an important role.
During the colonial period, European rule slowed institutional Islamic growth but did not eliminate it. Today, Islam remains a significant minority religion in Central Africa, where it continues to shape cultural, social, and economic life.
