Although Islam has a long history in Western Europe, the modern Muslim presence largely stems from post-World War II migration from North Africa, Turkey, the Middle East and South Asia.

Today, Western Europe is home to about 25-30 million Muslims. Islam in the region is mainly Sunni, but there are also Shia communities.
