Orthodoxy in Eastern Europe

african.mapper:

Christianity has played a significant role in the history and culture of Eastern Europe. The conversion of Kievan Rus’ in 988 AD, under Prince Vladimir, marked the beginning of the spread of Eastern Orthodox Christianity to what is now Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.

During the 20th century, much of Eastern Europe came under communist rule, particularly after World War II. Communist regimes were typically hostile to religious institutions, and the church’s role in society was restricted. This led to a decline in religious observance in some countries, while in others, the church maintained a degree of resistance to the state’s secular policies.

Following the fall of communism in the late 20th century, there has been a resurgence of Christianity in many Eastern European countries.
