According to the 1945 British Mandate census, Christians made up about 8.2% of the population in modern Israeli territory.
During 1948-1949, 2/3 of Christians fled or were expelled by Israeli forces, many Christian villages like Iqrit, Al-Bassa and Kafr Biram were depopulated then destroyed by Israel.
After the war, the percentage of Christians within Israel’s borders began to drop steadily due to emigration and military rule from 1948 until 1966, eventually reaching the current level of around 1.9% of the population.
