This map is a screenshot of the game Imperator: Rome by Paradox Games supposedly showing the main religions of Europe around the year 304 bc. At the time of preparing this post (I usually prepare my posts up to a month in advance) I haven't played the game much yet but what I've seen and experienced so far I've enjoyed. I do find the way the game defines its religions a bit disappointing, though, as it seems overly simplistic, although that might have been something that the developers couldn't focus on due to the overall scope of the game. The "Hellenic" religion, for example, could've been divided into a Hellenic proper and an Italic branch. Furthermore, I'm uncertain whether Hellenic beliefs could've been found in the Alps this early on. The description of all variations of Celtic beliefs as simply "druidic" is also somewhat misleading, as Druids aren't attested among all Celtic peoples of Antiquity. "Iberic" seems to be just a conglomeration of various peoples and their beliefs under an "Iberian" label. "Tuistic" is an interesting name for the various beliefs the Germanic tribes shared, although one, that I've not encountered before. What are your thoughts on this map and the game? Let me know in the comments below, I'm looking forward to your feedback!
