Roman Catholics around the World, 2025

geomapas.gr:

With almost 1.3 billion followers, Roman Catholicism remains the largest Christian denomination, a faith that spans continents, languages, and cultures. The Church’s global heartbeats are no longer confined to Rome or Europe: today, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Philippines host some of the world’s largest Catholic populations. Brazil alone counts more Catholics than any other country, while nations like Mexico, the United States, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Philippines form the rest of the top five.

In Europe, traditional bastions like Italy, Poland, and France still hold firm, even as secularization grows. Meanwhile, Catholicism is expanding rapidly in Africa and parts of Asia, transforming the Church’s demographic and cultural balance. From Vatican City’s spiritual leadership to remote Andean villages or African parishes alive with music, Catholicism continues to shape societies, politics, and identity on a truly global scale, its cross still one of the most recognized symbols on Earth.

🤓 Fun facts:

1️⃣ The Philippines is the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia.

2️⃣ Africa’s Catholic population has grown tenfold since 1950.

Has the “center” of Catholicism shifted away from Europe for good? How does Catholicism adapt to such different cultures, from Mexico to the Philippines?
