Highest temperatures ever measured on each continent

weather_academy:

The highest temperatures ever measured across each continent and region, based on data from the World Meteorological Organization (as of January 2024).

While some records, especially those dating back more than a century, remain subject to debate due to less advanced instrumentation and observational practices, they are still part of the official climatological archive. Several additional records are currently under evaluation.

What all these extremes have in common is a very specific meteorological setup. Persistent high-pressure systems, subsidence, cloud-free skies, and extremely dry surfaces allow temperatures to peak under maximum solar heating.

🌎 North America 56.7°C
Death Valley (1913)
A powerful subtropical ridge and strong subsidence, combined with basin topography, allowed extreme heat to accumulate.

🌍 Africa 55.0°C
Kebili, Tunisia (1931)
Deep Saharan high pressure with intense solar heating over arid terrain and very low humidity.

🌏 Asia 54.0°C
Mitribah, Kuwait (2016)
Persistent subtropical ridge with a very dry air mass and extreme land-surface heating.
Closely followed by 53.7°C in Turbat in 2017.

🌏 Australia and Oceania 50.7°C
Oodnadatta, Australia (1960)
Strong continental heat low with clear skies and prolonged inland heat build-up.

🌍 Europe 48.8°C
Syracuse, Sicily (2021)
An intense African plume under a blocking high advected extremely hot Saharan air into southern Europe.

🌎 South America 48.9°C
Rivadavia, Argentina (1905)
Stagnant high-pressure system with strong insolation over a dry continental interior.

❄️ Arctic 38.0°C
Verkhoyansk (2020)
Exceptional blocking pattern with warm air advection far north into Siberia under a persistent ridge.

❄️ Antarctica 18.3°C
Esperanza Base (2020)
Foehn-driven warming combined with anomalous high pressure and downslope winds.

💡 Extreme temperatures are not random. They occur when atmospheric conditions align perfectly in time and space.
