The number of Greeks in Turkey declined during the 20th century due to wars and persecution. After the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), tensions increased, and during World War I, they faced forced deportations. Following the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) mandated a population exchange, leading to the expulsion of 1.2 million Greeks from Turkey. Later, pressures increased, especially during the Istanbul pogrom of 1955, forcing more to migrate. Today, a small Greek minority remains, mostly in Istanbul, struggling to preserve its identity.
