Morrocan Irredentism: the idea of Greater Morroco

The theory of Greater Morocco originated in the 1920s and was formalised in 1943 by Allal El Fassi, founder of the nationalist Istiqlal Party.

The origin of this irredentist doctrine is based on three main pillars. First, historical legitimacy, which defends the territorial and political continuity between the modern state and ancient Maghrebi empires, such as the Marinid Sultanate or the Almohad Empire.

Second, as a response to colonialism, it capitalized on popular rejection of the French and Spanish protectorates, blending Salafism and Pan-Arabism to consolidate a unified national identity.

Finally, through state adoption following Moroccan independence in 1956, the political elite (makhzen) and King Hassan II integrated these claims directly into the Kingdom's official discourse.
