From empire to independence β Spain once ruled vast territories across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and even parts of Europe. This map shows when those nations finally broke free.
π Most Latin American countries gained independence in the early 1800s β Argentina (1816), Chile (1818), Mexico (1821), and many others followed in quick succession, often inspired by the wave of revolutions sweeping the region.
π Beyond the Americas, Spain also lost territories like the Netherlands (1581), Morocco (1956), the Philippines (1898), and finally Equatorial Guinea in 1968 β its last major colony.
Today, Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people, a lasting reminder of the empireβs reach.
