Dictators overthrown by the Arab Spring

the.world.in.maps:

In 2011, history was made as Tunisia’s Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia, ending his 23-year rule. This was the first time an Arab dictator was removed by a popular uprising, not a coup, signaling the start of the Arab Spring’s powerful ripple through the region. The Arab Spring, a wave of pro-democracy uprisings that began in Tunisia in 2010, shook the foundations of authoritarian rule across the Middle East and North Africa, toppling several long-standing leaders: Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, who ruled for nearly 30 years, stepped down in February 2011 following mass protests. Libya saw the violent downfall of Muammar Gaddafi, in power since 1969, who was captured and killed in October 2011. In Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had led the country for over three decades, resigned under pressure in February 2012. Assad’s fall last year concluded an arc in the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings that reshaped the region.
