1824 Ayacucho and the end of the Spanish continental empire in America.

1825-28 Argentina and Brazil fight militarily over Uruguay.

1826 Inter-American Conference in Panama, called by Bolivar, and an unsuccessful attempt to create a cooperative organization among the American states.

1830 Gran Colombia is divided into three states: Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

1846 Treaty of Bidlack: Colombia grants the United States the right to transit the Isthmus of Panama for commercial purposes, on the condition that its sovereignty is respected.

1855 Filibuster William Walker invades Nicaragua and proclaims himself president a year later, with the recognition of the United States.

1864-65 Second American Congress in Lima; Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Guatemala participated.

1865-70 War of the Triple Alliance between Paraguay and Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

1879-81 War of the Pacific between Chile and Peru and Bolivia. The latter was forced to relinquish its entire Pacific coastline, thus losing its access to the sea. The provinces of Tacna and Arica, previously under Peruvian sovereignty, passed to Chile for ten years. However, the issue was not resolved until 1929, when the two countries agreed on the division of the disputed territories: Peru regained possession of Tacna while Chile retained Arica.

1880 End of the Argentine Civil Wars, which began in 1814.

1881, 1902 Definition of the border between Chile and Argentina. 1889 The Emperor of Brazil abdicates; the Republic is born.

1895 Border conflict between Venezuela and Great Britain over the delimitation of the borders of British Guiana and possession of the territory located at the mouth of the Orinoco River.

1899 Brazil occupies Acre, a Bolivian territory.

1903 The Americans support an anti-Columbian rebellion in Panama and create a new republic, ceding them 1,432 km² in perpetuity for the canal.
