This map traces the epic journey of Marco Polo between 1271 and 1295, following his route along the Silk Road through the Middle East, Central Asia, and China. His travels offered Europeans a vivid and unprecedented glimpse into the East, particularly the vast wealth and sophistication of the Mongol Empire under Kublai Khan.

During his time in Asia, Polo encountered diverse cultures, unfamiliar landscapes, and remarkable innovations such as paper money, coal fuel, and gunpowder. He served at the Mongol court and recorded his detailed observations in Devisement du Monde (Description of the World, later known as Il Milione or The Travels of Marco Polo). His accounts of Cathay (China) and the Mongol realm captivated European audiences and went on to inspire generations of explorers, including Christopher Columbus.
