Europe Redrawn After World War I
This map shows Europe in November 1920, in the turbulent aftermath of the First World War, as new borders and powers emerged from the ruins of fallen empires.
The Treaty of Versailles (1919) and the Treaty of Sèvres (1920) profoundly reshaped the continent. Germany, stripped of territory and forced to pay reparations, saw its empire dismantled. The Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires collapsed, giving rise to new nations such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. The Ottoman Empire was reduced to a Turkish core, while France and Britain gained control of its former Arab provinces under League of Nations mandates. Meanwhile, the Russian Empire was mired in civil war following the Bolshevik Revolution. Across Europe, political fragility, nationalist unrest, and economic hardship defined a volatile postwar order.
