On November 1, 1942, Europe was deeply embroiled in World War II, with fighting raging on multiple fronts. On the Eastern Front, the Germans were stalled at Stalingrad, where Soviet resistance marked the beginning of a turning point. The Red Army was preparing a counteroffensive that would shift the course of the war.
In the Mediterranean, the Allies had achieved a decisive breakthrough with their victory in the Second Battle of El Alamein (which began on October 23), forcing the Italo-German forces to retreat toward Tunisia. Meanwhile, Germany maintained control over much of occupied Europe, exploiting resources and labor, while resistance movements grew in France, Poland, Yugoslavia, and elsewhere. The persecution of Jews was at its peak, with mass deportations to extermination camps. At sea, the Battle of the Atlantic continued, but the Allies were improving their defenses against German U-boats. The events of November marked the beginning of a significant shift: the Axis powers were increasingly on the defensive.
