The map shows the enormous population losses in Europe during World War ii, particularly in the eastern part of the continent, where the fighting was the heaviest and civilians were the most vulnerable. The greatest losses were suffered by the Soviet Union and Poland, which were the scene of brutal fighting, occupation and crimes, including the Holocaust. Central and Southeastern Europe also saw high losses, caused by both military operations and repression of civilians. Smaller but still significant losses occurred in Western Europe. Partner:
